 Why is visual hierarchy so important in graphic design? What is white space? 

Visual hierarchy is a very important element within graphic design. Hierarchy reflects the priority, emphasis, and tone of voice. As designers, we have to make a conscious decision on the levels of hierarchy of the information that we are communicating within our designs. There are various types of design choices that can be made to show visual hierarchy in the work that we make. Some examples of this are the choice of typeface, color palette, and structure. Being able to interpret the connotations of different typefaces is valuable. An example of this is large bold full-caps sans-serif typefaces which are very visible. But this font choice also is commonly read as a sign of warning or danger, so it is important to consider how the typeface communicates to the viewer. The second way of showing visual hierarchy in design is through the colors we choose. Color has numerous roles to play in creating hierarchy, adding dimension to the order of information. Certain colors attract our attention more and communicate emotions and feelings based on the tone. Another way to demonstrate hierarchy is through structural decisions that communicate priority, emphasis, and possible tone of voice. Spacing also plays an important role in the hierarchy because it can help the viewer focus on certain elements of the design layout giving space for the design to breathe. Space is used to separate or connect elements in your design layout, adding wide space creates emphasis on the difference between different graphic elements of the composition, and adding narrower space between them creates relationships between the elements. All of these elements are vital and play an important role in graphic design and visual communication.
