NMDP Externship -ASSIGMENT 1

Voting is a fundamental to America's representative democracy. But for many years people with disabilities they have been excluded from being able to take part in electing government officials.  People with intellectual or mental health disabilities have been prevented from voting because of prejudicial assumptions about their capabilities. Those who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids, such as walkers, have been unable to enter polling places to cast their ballot because there was no ramp.  Individuals who are blind or have low vision could not cast their vote because the ballot was completely inaccessible to them. After researching this topic I found that if people with disabilities voted at the same rate as people without disabilities who have the same demographic characteristics, there would be about 2.35 million more voters.

I wanted to focus the message of" Break Barriers at the Ballot" toward a specific audience in mind (Intellectual and mental health disabilities). The phrase "Break Barriers at the Ballot" is to empower this group of individuals to use their voice in this election to stand up for what they believe in. When designing for this project I wanted to choose a style of font that could be easily read by the specific audience I am going for. There needs to be a break in physical and social barriers that stand in the way of these voters. Also there is a need for morre advocacy for issues and obstacles that these American's experience when voting. Everyone has the right to participate in the democractic process and everyones voice should be heard.
