TSM - ASSIGNMENT 3 HOLLYWOOD FACES

HOLLYWOOD FACES

I have recently become very interested in exploring collage in to my art making. I always thought 2d collages were very interesting but had never really seen any examples of collage being used in video. throughout this process I was able to see more examples of the way in which collage could be pushed in more ways than what I had thought I had known. My thought process for this project was my interest in studying and learning about different time periods especially the war time eras of America. From the old vintage magazines that I have collected over time there was a section where it focused on the faces of hollywood during the 1920-1940's. The artist, Alex Prager's work often pertains to  blend the archetypes of post-war America and the portrayals of women from old hollywood cinema into her photos and filmmaking works. Through this project I wanted to experiment with the ways in which women were portrayed in early cinema similarly to Alex Prager's photos and films. I went through the different newpaper pictures and articles that were in the magazines that I had and picked content that pertained to themes that are found within early hollywood cinema. I focus on the way in Hollywood shaped the way in which women were portayed and sexualized during this "golden age" of cinema. In future projects I would like to explore this topic and research more about this time period. I also think it would be great to study more about consumerism with collage art to mix with this topic of women in Old Hollywood.

  1. Raymond Bieber: This is an impressive work. I actually paused it sometimes so I could admire some frames. The theme of women in Hollywood during a specific era is clear. Some of the frames could serve as standalone pieces. The camera seems to shake but it could also be just the paper moving, I honestly cannot tell which. The color works well to capture the time frame that you are discussing in your piece. One aspect of this that could be improved is to maybe not have the "Hollywood Faces 1925-1940" appear more than once. I feel that is a little too direct in driving home the point of your video because it introduces us to the idea well at the beginning. The work seems complete to me with each frame is well filled. This definitely looks like it took a lot of work to plan out and photograph with all of the different moving little pieces.

  2. Jason Chappuies: This is great work! The topic of vintage Hollywood and the "golden age" of cinema has always interested me and I found it really fitting for you to use this topic for this assignment. The stop motion reflects the early technology that was available to cinema at the time. The sound effects used are really successful in giving more life to the moving paper. The crumpled paper around the actor and the actress emerging from the mountains are compositions that work the best. I would have liked to have seen more subtle hints of color. The red frame around the film still was interesting and I'm curious if more film editing marks would allow for more rhythm and repetition. Can't wait to see what you have planned for the final project! I think if you expand on this idea and possibly include actual negatives to provide a transparent and layered composition.
