Graphic Design 1- Assignment 3

COVETTE MAGAZINE

My idea for this magazine came about from my love for reading lifestyle and travel magazines. I take inspiration from Magnolia Journal, Vogue, and other travel and design magazines. These inspirations influenced me to want to create a my own magazine the was based off of topics such as lifestyle, design, travel, and home. In this magazine I specifically focus on places and topics that I find influence in my own life and artwork. Places like the Hamptons, rustic interior design, vintage elements, travel abroad, simple living, and my passion for horses are elements that I want to be featured in this issue of my magazine.

The inspirations for my magazine reflect to the way in which I designed the front and back covers of my magazine. The combination of simple, bright, fresh, airy, and nuetral color palette comes from my  love for the Hamptons style of interior design. Coastal and casual interior design style originally was inspired by a group of villages called The Hamptons on Long Island, New York. This area and design has come to represent elegant and relaxed coastal living. I wanted to use this style design into my inspiration for the layout and design of my magazine. I utilize that design influence by keeping the designs with a light and airy background. For the first cover I really use the negative space within my design to emulate the relaxed and open coastal feeling. I also use a bright and neutral picture of the Montauk Point Lighthouse, which is located in the Hamptons.

On the other design I wanted to really go for the classic and elegant look that is tied to the Hampton Style. For this design I focused making sure that I was creating a classic look by my choice in font and style of the text. I often associate classic and elegant with Vogue magazine and the way in which they use text on the top of their magazines. I want the mix the bold, chic, and refined style that would express both the Vogue and Hamptons style on the front and back cover of this design.  I also similarly use a simple picture from the seagrass of the east coast when my family and I would go to the Hamptons.

The inspiration for the name of this magazine came from what the east coast and the beach means for me. A cove is a sheltered bay that keeps one safe from the outside world and the ending ette means little. To me the Hamptons are my little shelter that I am comforted and protected by. The Hamptons is my home away from home to me and I feel I am able to escape from the world and truly focus the simple things in life. I also feel the most inspired by the designs and influences when I do go and visit  the east coast. As a result of this inspiration I came up with this name Covette for my magazine.

Comments

  1. The first cover of the zine is very clean, well laid out and easy to read. Both covers are great I just like the abstract cover better. The different types used work well together. The color of type in the sky is a great detail. The name of the zine was developed in a thoughtful way. The repetition of the words from the front to back is as Barry says, “a redundancy”. I might have just put the words on the back in the colored box. This would give more room for the beautiful picture on the cover.
The second cover I really like to way the picture is split from front to back. The type on this version has a better placement.

  2. Good job on both of these covers. I feel they were both really well done and I can see them actually being printed on a magazine. Using the black text on a white background has a good contrast that is hard to miss. You also have a good use of text scaling, with the title always being the largest and your subcategories being smaller. The only thing that I would consider looking at again is the image of the light house in the second front cover. The top of the image is clipping behind your title . I just feel like its has too hard of edge and can be distracting. However, you also do this in your first front cover, but the color of the sky is similar to the white background so it works well.

  3. Your designs are very clean throughout the project so far. It is clear there's a theme of calming nature and simplicity. All of the font types used work very well together; they're easy to read, simple, and classy. The images go along with the text. There is a noticeable color pallet of dull blues, browns, and grays along with green that pops. Everything is lined up compositionally in ways that makes sense and is easily legible, while still being interesting to look at.
