TSM - Assignment 2 Portrait of a Place
In Genesis 11 the people began to worship in the wrong way and were straying away from the Lord. In order to remind the people the creator that they come from by causing the people to speak all different languages and scatter all over the earth. That is why this city was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world.
This work comments ways in which language relates to the way worship can be through different languages. Originally the separation was made because the people of Babel began to become arrogant and stray away from the Lord. This work does the opposite, it uses language (irish gaelic) that is uncommon to me but are prayers that I continuously say in within my practice of my catholic faith. The other element about the words is their use of repetition to represent the repetition of the prayers used during the rosary. When the practice of prayer occurs in my life I feel the closest to God when I go to this little chapel. This is the place in which I can tap in to my relationship with Him and I feel the most at peace. The peaceful feeling is emphasized with the whispering of the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers that are spoken in Gaelic.
