graphic design1 - The oscars showed us why typography matters
I remember this event occurring during the Oscars, but didn' know the real reason behind the mistake that occurred. The only thing that I recollect is that the winning names that were announced were wrong. After reading the link I discovered that this mistake could have been easily prevented with the help of a graphic designer and the use of heirarchy in typography. When looking at the card that was given to the person reading out the winner it is easy to see how one could make the mistake that happened. The card needed to be written and designed in a way that makes it clear what the essential information is to the person announcing. Changing the heirarchy and scale can dramatically change the way in which the information is communicated. The fact that this occurred on the big stage is shows that typography is a skill and is vital to communicated information effectively, if it isnt done properly it can lead to mistakes.
I think it is interesting that a production as big as the Oscars would allow this design to be used when announcing a winner. I would think that they would go the extra measures to make sure that the imformation is being communicated clearly to ensure that a mistake like this would not occurr. Now seeing the card it just shows how I am able to spot graphics that lack hierarchy in the typography.
