TSM Loop Reading
As an artist I am new to the processes and practices of video art. I have never experimented with film and video to create art. I also have had a limited exposure to looping video art so the whole idea of video art is very new to me. When reading Loops in the work of Omer Fast I noticed that one of the ideas that was brought up multiple times was this idea of contemporary temporality. From what I picked up from this idea of temporality was that the way in which it could manipulate time for the viewers. Time is limited and does not last, but through looping video art artists are able to adjust and play with the viewers experience with time. The artist are specifically avoiding a linear progression of events so that the viewers loose the sense of time through their experience. The manipulation of time relates back to the idea of temporality through this medium of art.
Another point that was mentioned within this reading was Fast's way of looping his work. I thought this quote was interesting about the way in which the video's loop connects.
"The ways that Fast “connects” his loops are always seamless; at the same time they are moments of rupture, when the reality of the circularity hits the viewer. As the video loops back upon itself, at this moment the viewer is tacitly addressed and their viewing position potentially shifts, opening up space for critical reflection beyond the closed-cycle. These moments of “seamless rupture” become forceful and memorable because they are tied up in viewers’ understanding of both cyclical and linear temporal structures." When considering my current project that directly works with time and looping is the way in which the connection of the "beginning" and "end" of my video create this seamless loop.
