Graphic Design 1- Three Design Projects I Like

Endless Summer Poster - Designed by Van Hamersveld

This poster has become iconic for those not only who follow the surf world but for all ranges of people. I remember seeing this poster within a film that was hanging on someones wall and immediately fell in love with it. I have always been interested in the surf scene and the relaxed vibes that revolve around the surfing life which have been found within my personality and the things that I enjoy and gravitate towards. By the influences of the surf scene in my life and my interest in pop art I feel so strongly about the design of this films poster.  The Endless Summer poster has a pop art style to it that keeps the poster graphic elements simple ehich has made it to be very successful. The black silhouettes creates a high contrast with the popping warm tones of the yellow, orange, and pink. The three men holding their surfboards keeps the picture relaxed which is the way of life that these surfers live. Many have found inspiration to use the layout and color scheme from this iconic poster in their work.

Dick Avedon had shot a failed cover image with an impossible hat that he hated. We had to go to press that night and...

Harper Bazaar's April 1965 Issue- Designed by Ruth Ansel

I came across this designer and work after researching graphic designers through AIGA website. I am really drawn to magazine design and have always been a fan of looking at the history of top name fashion magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Bazaar. When looking through the list of designers the work of Ruth Ansel caught my eye because of the vibrancy of color and the collage effect that this work has. I have recently done some collage work and this issues cover has the element of collage with the square cutout of the womans eye. I also really like the typeface that Ruth Ansel uses for this issue and I think the way in which the subheadings on the left side of the issue are placed in a very unique way.

Little Miss Sunshine Poster- Designed by BTL Communications

This is one of my favorite films but I also have always loved the design of the poster for this indie film. The reason why I love this poster so much is the way in which the designer creates motion through the image at the bottom of the poster. This scene of the family running toward the moving bus is a vital part to the film. In the design of the poster the focus is directed to the van, which is figuratively and literally the vechicle to the story of Little Miss Sunshine. The color palette is another reason as to why I feel this poster so successfull because of the symbolism that is related back to the title of the film. The yellow contrasts well with the black text on the poster. The font that is used is simple which translates well to the simplicity and free flowing feel of this indie film.
