2020 The Garden of Forking Paths

THE GARDEN OF FORKING PATHS

This reading is very relevant to the current project that my classmates and I are working on. The reason why this piece is relevant to the interactive project is because of the idea of choosing many pathways and touches on the subject of getting lost in time. When reading The Garden of Forking Paths the story is set up to be a man vs man situation where the main character Yu Tsun has to complete a mission. This allows the reader to feel like they are apart of a mission, which can be an example of how one could create an interactive piece for this class assignment. Another aspect of the reading that is unique to most traditonal stories given the fact that Yu Tsun killed Stephen Albert just to send a message to The Chief that the English weapons were stored in the town of Albert. The twist and turn of the events is what makes the reading similar to as if someone was completing a maze. This way of story telling is engaging and non traditional, which I believe is a way of keeping stories from repeating the same ending. Having a maze like way of telling a story can lead to many different pathways but then all lead back to the end.

I know for my piece I want to touch on the theme of history, heritage, and time in my piece. I have always had a deep interest in learning and discovering about cultural backgrounds and looking into the ideas, objects, and lifestyle of the past so I wanted to incorporate that in to my interactive assignment.

I think this idea of creating an interactive style piece where there are multiple ways of experiencing art is a very interesting way to creating art. For me I have always have seen art in this one dimensional way that, but now taking this class has opened my eyes to ways of telling a story. With the digital age that we are in now I believe that it is very easy for new media artists to explore the range of medias and the process of creating these interactive worlds of storytelling.
