2020 Psychogeography

Psychogeography

I had never heard the term psychogeography before, but after reading about it the idea itself is very interesting. I relate this to one of the the classes that I had taken my first semester of my freshman year of college. The class was called mindful creativity, the core part of the class was meditation and each week we focused on the different topics like such as mindful walking. Through taking Mindful Creativity I have developed a new perspective on communication, awareness, and recognizing creative blockers. After reading about psychogeography I noticed that mindful walking is very similar to this practice exploration of urban environments, which emphasizes playfulness and "drifting". Mindful walking was focused on walking within our the enviornment without the distractions of our personal life and without the intention of going to a specific place. This practice allows for the person to become one with their surroundings. Exploring Psychogeography will enable people to take in the experiences of the urban enviornment around them and have the chance to feel emotions and changes in their behavior. When I would practice mindful walking around Toledo's campus I was able to experience feelings of peace and content while taking in the layout of campus.

The practice of psychogeography I feel that this can be applied to the movement of Surrealism. This movement is focused on channeling the unconsious to create experiences and feelings. In contemporary art in the twenty first century can dive in deeper into the art of psychogeography. I feel this art can definitely be utilized with interactive art forms such as virtual reality. Virtual reality can allow the viewers to feel this sense of playfullness and drifting through the created urban enviornments.
