Public Domain and Creative Commons
Public Domain, Trademarks, and Copyright was something that I was always aware of but never really knew about them in depth. After watching the video RiP: a remix manifesto it dove into the idea of copyright and what should and shouldn't we use. It also brought up the topic of is it protecting us or is it limiting our creativity? I was able to get a greater understanding of copyright after watching the video.
Now this past assignment I had to read a website article about Public Domain. Once again I knew the general idea of it, but not the little details that I had learned after reading the article. I had no idea that public domain came about in the mid 18th century that was a concept that was created by the Romans. They believed that many things should be shared amoung people. That way of thinking is very interesting because the Romans had adopted any ideas from the Greek, which then lead to developement within their own society. Without the ideas from others, the Romans wouldn't have made the advancements in their society. There has been this trend throughout history that has showed that we as people take ideas from others and build upon them to make something that is even better. It is important to continue this trend so that we can continue to grow and improve. With the help of public domain it allows us to use videos, photos, audio, and many other things to use in our own work. Being able to build off of those things that are provided to us through public domain we are able to create new perspectives on ideas, help provide an answer to a problem, or spark creativity.
Having the public domain is a very beneficial factor to our society. Creative commons is the biggest way for people to be able to connect and create without having to worry about copyright. I really liked the idea that Creative Commons builds a community through creativitiy. Everything is open for anyone around the world to use which allows us to build relationships with others and to share new takes on works. Since it is open to anyone it allows no limit to who can use it. Whether it be a professional artist, someone who creates as a hobby, someone who is in need of inspiriation, or anything else. All of these people are able to all go to this site to use the works of others without the issue of copyright is very beneficial for our society to grow and connect.
